What is the SIP?

Skits's Summer Immersion Program (SIP) offers courses in math, coding, chess, and 3D modeling/CAD to students from grades one through six, free of cost. Volunteers from local middle and high schools help teach elementary students as teachers, teacher's assistants, or tutors. Classes take place weekly online for five weeks, preparing students for the upcoming school year and introducing them to the various fields of STEM.

Impact

This summer, we were able to recruit 20+ volunteers and 15+ students. In total, volunteers spent 305+ hours working on lesson writing, communication, and teaching, which was an increase of over 17% from last year's SIP session.

Reviews from Participants

Let's hear what the volunteers had to say about their experiences of teaching in the SIP!

"I love the educational and fun path that we are creating for the youth in STEM." - S.M.

"I like[d] the collaborative environment and how everyone [was] excited about learning." - C.C.

"[I]t's a great way for students to learn what they became interested in." - M.S.

"It was great to see how SKITS was able to provide such a fun environment for younger children to help them explore their love for STEM." - K.H.

Conclusion

Skits is glad to have been able to host an engaging summer program, and looks forward to the next SIP. A new Skits project is in the works as well. If you would like to keep up-to-date with Skits's events, please follow us on Instagram @skits.stem and sign up for the monthly newsletter!
