"We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained." - Marie Curie
Art is a form where one can express themselves. Combining art and science together results in a magnificent product like this experiment here. Try it out and see for yourself.
Materials:
A bowl
½ cup of milk
Dish soap
Cotton swab
Food Coloring, more than one color
Pepper (optional)
Directions:
1) Pour the milk into the bowl and try not to move the bowl since you want to keep the milk as still as possible.
2) Put a drop of food coloring in different places in the milk.
3) Add a little bit of soap on the end of a cotton swab and touch one of the colors.
4) Watch and observe what happens.
5) You can clean up by pouring the milk down the drain.
The Science Behind It All:
Milk contains fat in it which the food coloring sits on top of. All of the fat in milk are connected through bonds and dish soap helps break those bonds. This is why dish soap is used on oily or greasy dishes since it helps breaks these bonds in fats. Adding the dish soap to the milk "breaks" these bonds and produces milk art. The food coloring being on top of the fat of the milk allows us to see these the movement caused by the dish soap when the art is forming.
